I have a free domain (FlamingoJeff.com) with unlimited bandwidth and storage as part of my 1and1 account. I plan to use it for links to archived sites, photo slideshows, galleries and individual pics, and the occasional rant.

I've been away from coding for quite a while. What do the cool kids use? JQuery, plain javascript and CSS, WordPress, other?

Ruby mostly. jQuery for frontend.

I use python but I am not cool.

I saw the SASS link, but didn't go deep enough into it to see the advantages.

At my age my feeble brain only has room to learn one more thing.

and I'll have to dump something else to make room for it.

Way too social for me.

No, not for social. As a structure. These prefabs are actually quite fantastic these days, don't turn up your nose at them - your life will be much easier and you can find tons of ways to adapt the basic model to your tastes.

Frankly you don't need to learn code any more if your goal is to do what you describe... But far be it from me to tell you not to learn something of that's what you really want and the revamp is your excuse.

WTF? When I check out Tumblr and I want to check out what photosets are I get sent to a page that tells me how great they are, but not what they are. i have to sign in to learn that.

Isn't there any consolidated "about" page for Tumblr?

And not owning a mobile phone, its smartphone apps don't ring my bell.

I just want to be able to arrange my photos and slideshows in my own order (unlike Flickr), post an occasional blog post, and control the look.

I have over 65 built-in apps that I can choose from, from Joomla and Drupal to WordPress and Zen Photo. thats too many choices to start with,

Thanks WB, lots to read in there.

With my CodeIgniter (PHP), MySQL and jQuery work I'm far from being a cool kid, but that's what I'm doing now.

Same here. Just making eCommerce sites with php/MySQL/jQuery/Drupal...that is, if my 2012 budget gets approved :|
