I only use FB messenger (Benefit - NOT having to open Facebook proper).

The weird thing is, the little minifeed at the top of the window that streams the interactions of friends and complete strangers.

ie: If a friend comments on a complete stranger's photo, I see it. Same goes if a friend comments on an item from a complete stranger.

It's creepy.

I covered this very thing yesterday on the Book of Faces...

I've been seeing a few friends getting hoaxed -

"Hover over my name above. In a few seconds you'll see a box that says "Subscribed". Hover over that, then go to "Comments and Likes" and unclick it. That will stop all our posts showing up on the side bar for strangers to see. But most important, it limits hackers from invading our profiles."

This does NOT work, unsubscribing from someone simply hides their posts from you. To change your privacy settings for the audience of your posts and comments, read this.

People are all in a tizzy as they realize the sidebar is posting stuff from friends of friends and OH NOES IT PROBABLY SHOWS THEIR STUFF TO PEOPLE THEY DON'T KNOW. This is because most people don't know you can (and probably should if you care) set sharing levels on each post you make, much like G+. You can also do this retroactively on your old posts by hovering over the wee icon next to the time of your post.

tl;dr - you can change your FB privacy settings on each post you make.

Hah! Nice.

It actually doesn't bother me a smidge seeing as I don't post anything on FB anymore.

Adjusting privacy settings like that is quite smart, if you've got your lists/"circles" managed properly to begin with.

Worth noting, it defaults to the settings you applied to your most recent post.

Also, if you comment on a post set to "public", your comment is public. The privacy settings of the original post apply to all comments made to it.

Just posted this to the Book of Faces:

Of course, as another friend pointed out, that takes all the fun out of Facebook. I kind of like the stalkerishness of the sidebar.

WTF is "friends except aquaintances"??

Aquaintances are people who know, who are not your friends. They are not a subset of your friends.

What I think of facebook is poop. And I think its IPO is a joke, there's no way Facebook as the kind of staying power to make it so valuable. It will crash and starting it as high as they are I doubt it will even see that much growth after the first couple of weeks.

Ususally, when I only want a certain subset of people to read something, I send them an email.

I've been trying to unfriend people but ever since timeline rolled out it doesn't work.

Click on the person's name

Click on the little gear icon near the top right

"Report/Block"

Or you can go to their house and glass them in the neck.

Quebec in the winter time doesn't sound very appealing at all though.

Pointed an acquaintance to this thread.

Reaction: "OMG that's too much to read how do I fix it so no one can see my stuff? But I want some people to see it, like friends and stuff."

Me: "Don't know, I'm not really active on FB at all. You're on your own, sister."

Equal parts blame to FB and the girl though (who also messaged me to ask for the link to this thread again).

This is why it's better to have all your friends come from the internet.

Sorry, you must be a member to post to a conversation. Either log in or sign up to get involved.
