hey all,

I am working on a project that requires recording audio to a website. I remember this place used to do it:

http://www.pornfortheblind.org

I think they used some kind of Java app to do it. Is there any way that this can be done in flash? We are trying to make a flash website thats social network-y in the sense that people upload themselves playing instruments in either audio only, or audio + flash. Then others will be able to hear what other people have uploaded and harmonize with it.

then the app would mix the two together, and give the user controls over mixing and such. Would a site be able to play say, youtube standard video + audio, and while you listen to it through headphones, simultaneously record via line-in microphone? this would elimintate the need for fine tuning the mix so that it all lines up, but it sounds extremely processor intensive.

but yeah, the recording both on the flash side and server side is something I would love some input on from you smarter peeps.

thanks in advance!

don't have an answer, but I CAN tell you that you're going to run into real limitations & connection/bandwidth issues trying to capture realtime audio.

is uploading of pre-recorded audio not an option?

uploading pre-recorded audio is an option, however i would imagine it would be easier if the user recorded it direct while the other track was playing so that they would not have to line it up with some kind of online primitive audio sequencer.

maybe we limit the audio to 96 kbps mp3 and wait until the audio/video coming downstream is fully loaded before the recording session can start?

www.indaba.com used a Flash-based Session Console but you only dragged in tracks you created. They couldn't do the online jamming thing. They're about to release a new Session Console 2 that will work on the desktop as well but they went with Java instead.

NINJAM is created by the guy who made Winamp. It works fairly well as it buffers the stream so that you hear it one bar after it's been played and I think that's the only way to do what you want. http://evirtualstudio.com/ uses existing file types such as ProTool, Cubase, and SONAR and only really shares those. http://www.sonomawireworks.com/ has RiffWorks that records simultaneously. It uses their desktop application (RiffWorks) to coordinate with a server and shared throughhttp://www.riffworld.com/ - I have no idea how well this one works yet. I just grabbed it this weekend.

This is going to be tough. I was approached about building this one once with a programmer and I didn't think they knew what they were getting into (typical in LA). But I would honestly help you out where you needed it.

I think I also remember andre philipe michelle (or whatever his name was) working on a lot of flash audio applications and experiments....maybe he tried this. http://lab.andre-michelle.com/tag/audio/

[edit]find him here:http://www.hobnox.com/audiotool

He has AudioTool which he's working on but I see no network sync type stuff.
