I think most of us have become parents, and goals shift when that happens, but there's still a few things I wish for in my career, things that remain despite the heavy jade.
I would love to have work in Commarts someday.
Even having work on notcot or core77 or the like would make my day.
I was on infovis once. That was fun.
Industry recognition is a strange thing. I don't seem to think about it until it's way to late. I think everyone here feels like they've broken some new ground somewhere in there career, and sometimes a simple, hey that's awesome suffices, sometimes it doesn't.
What are your petty aspirations?
i'd say the ability to do live shows around the world cause people liked my music that much is the only petty thing i've got left, and even it isn't that strong of a desire.
Music was/is my thing. I'm pretty much like mosquito.
My brother and I were in a band a long time ago and we did quite well but we'd play originals and covers and not worry about anything and then we both got lives. I was playing competitive hockey and he was in film school. We kept writing and playing but just for ourselves because we grew up with music and we can't stop it.
Now I'm at the point where I just hope people like some of our 30+ songs. As we've gotten older now, we're scrambling to get all the songs recorded in a quality releasable way and we're accomplishing that. I've tried to share the good recordings with y'all.
But I also find myself less patient and aspiring to be back designing instead of programming Flash. It's just not FUN anymore the way Flash is. It isn't experimentally cool like it used to be unless you're pushing the limits of some mathematical programming. So, I find the designer part of me giving the beat downs to the programming skills I have acquired in Flash and my petty aspiration is to go work under some brilliant creative director somewhere even if I just get him coffee.
Within computing, not much. I had fun with Flash back in the day but long since lost interest. I feel the stirrings of interest in HTML5 and have a small project in mind that I might use as a way of tinkering with it, but for the most part real life has worn away most of the enthusiasm I once had for this sort of thing. Maybe if I were doing something else as a day job...
Aside from that, I still fantasise about having the time and energy to pursue at least one of the various book ideas I've been kicking around for years. I don't really aspire to success or popularity as a writer, but to have a single book completed and published would be pleasing.
Fuck "cool"
Do what you're interested in. Do you want to die informing people you had a cool life, or die knowing you had a good life and not having to tell or prove it to anyone.
I find my use of the word cool to be one of my most dismissive, disinterested responses to someone who can't take criticism.
I would still love to work in the aviation technology sector instead of sucky business apps. Mind you, working in finance has its upside (readas: better salary).
I aspire to remove myself from a position that was grossly misrepresented during the interview process.
Pay the bills.
1) Do some fun stuff 2) Make some fun stuff 3) Have my kid still like me when she grows up
I'm with you persist, industry recognition is petty, but I'd still like it. Commarts AIA award PDN 30
Otherwise, my goals are more reasonable and along the lines of Ari's. I want to enjoy what I do, not starve, and not have my kid (and wife) hate me.
Come up with a simple idea. Travel forward two hundred years to find that it has shaped lives.

Mind you, working in finance has its upside (readas: better salary). lately for me its not been even remotely rewarding as i'm watching project time lines halved and even quartered at times with barely any support to make it happen. for almost the last 2 years its been like this while being told its going to get better after X. then X comes and passes and instead of relief the work load doubles again.
but that said, i'd debate the better salary part depending. when you can walk up to the gate an hour before departure and get a $8,000 seat for free, it only takes a couple of those to boost you well over what you could make elsewhere. that's why its called the "golden handcuffs." united is presently hiring at least some IT folks. though if the merger is approved with continental count on some seriously abusive hours for a bit.

Time travel? Doesn't sound all that simple to me.

Dude, you're time travelling right now. Going backward or forward at incredible speed is the tricky part.
Oh, and I'd like to be a cultural icon.
famous or infamous?
Either will do.
dead or alive?
Either will do.
I want to be dead.
in-famous? IN-famous?!!

?
:ooh: Death by Buttr!
i'm not sure these count as petty
1) work with singer, horst or anvari on designing a house. unrealistic fantasy - across the street and north a few blocks, theoretically possible - up the hill and south a few blocks.
2) open comic book/popular art gallery/lounge
