YABB, XMB, PhpBB, or InvisionBoard?

Which of one is best free message board overall (rate by speed, security, features, etc)?

I searched google already and most say that Invision is the fastest and safest, but Yabb and phpBB has a lot more hacks. I would like to hear what you guys have to say.

get InvisionBoard, I've used PHPBB, IB and vB. If you have a very busy forum vB is a must (unless you roll your own k )

however, IB is the best choice when starting out- BY FAR.

I have used Invision and found it easy to get started with.

I bet you get better features on VBulletin

I've used phpBB on a couple of projects now, so easy my gran could install it.

And, as you said, plenty of add-ons if you like that sort of thing.

i've used IB. i installed it on a win2k box. worked amazingly well. i couldn't imagine it being much easier to install. and it seems to be running very well even though it's on a platform that it wasn't really designed for.

i'd say invision simply because it's what i know. but, like i said, i can't imagine any others being much easier.

Invisionboard rocks my socks off.

1.2 now with google friendly urls!

not sure if it's out yet though.

IB 1.2 is a Beta, they warn visitors about bugs, so I think I'll use 1.1, thanks everybody!

bump

Is this still the same 4 and a half years on? Invision Board still the easiest to set up, Mac Daddy? Or have the other ones improved? Are there some new kids on the block?

i like vanilla. it's pretty simple though, maybe too simple for what you need.

phpBB's biggest problem is that it's so popular, it's a huge target for script kiddies looking for exploits.

Third. I use it for a few applications and it's been pretty friendly. It's lacking in a lot of the add-ons that phpBB has, but it's pretty solid otherwise.

I've used phpBB and the V3 build is pretty nice.

for what it's worth, i'd vote vanilla depending on what features you're looking for. it's not as bloated as some of the others and with a few of the add-ons you should be able to get it cluttered up in no time with all sorts of random extras.

it's simple, it's relatively inviting and easy to jump in and start reading.

the main thing i'd caution against is if you audience is used to a more typical forum they can find it quiet off putting in the simplicity. it's worth the trouble to set up a sandbox and fuck around some.

after using it for a few projects - it makes some of the other forum options seem tacky.

i prefer IPB. i have used it on many sites and find its a lot faster and easier to use overall. also most mods for vb are made from IPB mods. the major downside to IPB is the price if you actually pay for it. Demo : free forums
