Not a lot of resolution on their free tilesets, but it's an awesome (maybe the only?) way to skin Google Maps.

MapBox rocks my socks. I've been using it on multiple projects lately. Be sure to check out TileMill - allows for custom tilesets.

It does not rely on Google Maps at all. It's an entirely separate setup. You can, however, use something like OpenLayers to display GM-supplied routing data etc.

Keep an eye on DevelopmentSeed. They are doing mad crazy shit with open data and visualization. They also happen to be a fantastically nice bunch of folks! :heart:
