helping a friend with a site, he had a dubiously sourced graphic and name he is promoting a night under. Far from ideal but we agreed to change the name slightly and I have made changes to the logo hopefully significant enough, somewhat to a pink theme as per his brief... its only my first stab and not yet quite happy with aspects, and maybe too much pink and the border thickness? His choice on the font.. Thoughts feedback? http://www.studyo54.co.uk/http://www.studyo54.net/

also its a lame attempt to get google to pick it up as early as possible, although I probably ought to mention 'nexus one' for that to happen! (just bought the names so may not propagate straight away but its on my server at mo so maybe faster.)

what is it for?

I sought of like it, but it would help to know what it is. Studio implies either a club, sound shop or something like that.

They run a popular night in a club on a friday. I don't want a link back yet but you can find info... ( put face book here ) / home.php# / event.php?eid=302574240588&index=1

It has one floor that plays salsa which is my main interest in getting involved, but they have two other floors with other music, it tends to be quite international and students and popular.

I have not had much opportunity to create interesting flash microsites from scratch direct, and a young crowd club site is ideal target for rich media, no designer or agency involved just helping a client realize an exciting site where I can put some interesting stuff in, I am not tied to a budget, I have a few of these in mind to push my design/code mix rather than pure dev, the next one is for an interior designers site (cousin getting back to work as her children grow up). So I am not aiming to go in as a designer but more provide quiet aspect of design and usability within some of the styles they want.

The image itself is cool, but I (personally) don't like the font. Never been a big fan of bauhaus.

I don't know if it's the font or the name itself, but I read it as "Stud Yo!". That mixed with the pink logo immediately makes me think gay club. Which is not a bad thing, if that is what you're going for. k

I'll let the font gurus talk more about fonts and give suggestions, I am by no means an expert, but one thing I would suggest that if you are sold on bauhaus, that you decrease the kerning between "5" and "4". Pull them together a bit. Maybe play with a different font JUST for the "54"...

I would also play with gradients and outlines on the text, it looks a bit flat on top of that funky image. Maybe have the text follow the shape on top and create some more text that does the same on the bottom so it looks like a badge? I'm rambling now...

Maybe instead of Bauhaus, you look at something like Chalet? The 1970 variant seems custom made for this purpose. http://www.houseind.com/fonts/chalet

Ok I grabbed the image online and traced bitmap so not very clean. Anyway I tried mixing the font in... not sure I like some aspects but not enough. logo2 - Chalet mix

i'm agreeing with ern and r_d, but if you stick with bauhaus, try a lighter weight. the one you have just has the clunk factor going a bit, like not enough negative space.

lighter weight even on the logo2 ?

Well if you gonna do it that way, then i would suggest to center the STUDYO 54 in the center over the hexagon. Using the style in logo2 with a pink border around the Studyo and the 54 how it is now. And add a white glow to all the text. (or a black, which suits you best)

personally, I liked the first one better perhaps it is the stroke I don't care for but I do see what you were going for with the 5&4 closer perhaps you could try [mis]using one of these characters "ū" "ü"... worked for Spinal Tap. you could also have your friend's club raise their volume to 11

I like the new ones a lot less than the old ones.

What do you think about doing the hex as just lines? No fill at all?

Agreed. Not to be a pill, but a logo with good graphic value should work well using only black and white.

I don't think the "groovy" disco font goes with the hard edges and strong geometric shapes in the logo... at all. Look at it in black and white with no fills & glows and I suspect you'll see what I mean.

maybe if I post original - more a case of taking there design away from a copyright, so maybe I was thinking too much in the box of adjusting there current design to stay with site color scheme and not fall foul of copyright. I will have to come back and solve this but maybe get the site together and then think more, if I was working from scratch I would prefer to be totally original, but I know from past experience to work within clients wishes. Thanks for all the input, I will see if I can come up with something better but may have to follow client.

To clarify, I'm not saying you should give them a black and white logo, but that the design should be strong enough to work in just black and white.

If you want the disco font, make the logo more organic shapes, if you want the geometrics in the logo, use a slab serif or something in your font.
