not sure this is in the correct place but does anyone know where I can view/search for historical whois data for a website without paying cash money?

For free? Nope.

DomainTools has a service that costs US$15/month

If you find a free site, please post it here for future reference.

i haven't actually tried it but i think you can get historical whois info here for a one time fee as opposed to monthly. $3.95 it looks like.

just click on 'domain names' on the left.
