Sony Pictures begins Blu-ray 3D authoring One of three digital intermediate rooms at Sony Colorworks

The Sony Pictures Entertainment Digital Authoring Center (DAC) is now offering Blu-ray 3Dâ„¢ disc authoring services.

The center, located on the Sony Studios lot in Culver City, provides high-quality compression and authoring services for the digitization of film and television content for the DVD and Blu-ray marketplace.

"With the introduction of Blu-ray 3D authoring, Sony Pictures completes its end-to-end solution for 3D entertainment production," said Tony Beswick, senior vice president, Technology and Operations, Sony Pictures Entertainment. "We offer clients across the entertainment landscape-Sony and other studios-the ability to shoot, create, convert, correct, master and, now, author in 3D."

The Digital Authoring Center is a component of Sony Pictures Studios industry-leading post-production services and facilities, including sound editorial, stock footage, visual effects, restoration and more. Colorworks, the studio's new digital intermediate (DI) facility serves Sony Pictures' and other clients' projects, including those in 3D. The facility recently completed the first Blu-ray 3D release from Sony Pictures, "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," which is currently being authored at the Digital Authoring Center.

"The 3D authoring capabilities at the Digital Authoring Center are one important aspect of what Sony is doing in 3D," said Chris Cookson, president, Sony Pictures Technologies, and chief officer, Sony 3D Technology Center.

"Sony is committed to 3D on every level – from producing 3D entertainment for consumers to enjoy in theaters and, soon, their homes, to the company's broad range of business and professional products, consumer devices and games, and the newly opened 3D Technology Center in Culver City, where we hope to help spread the creation of high quality 3D."

sony will have an msrp of $3,100 for a 46" for their low-end model. so probably $2100-$2500 street price. which isn't actually too bad for a sony with an LED backlight. still even after avatar i have no interest in seeing 3d at home.

It wasn't shitty and blurry if you were wearing your 3D glasses.
