That is awesome. I tell you what, illustrators had some serious skills in the day.

...and still got paid less than everyone else in the advertising business.

Yeah, that's bs. Those shots remind me of setups from Rockwell and Loomis.

It's pretty neat seeing the often meticulous photo references those guys would set up and shoot to work from. There's a lot of craft they had to master besides "just" painting.

EDIT: I know it's a risky proposition talking art with Ari, but I'm going to try anyway.

On a related note, Louis Smith is getting a lot of pubhttp://www.npg.org.uk/whatson/exhibitions/bp-portrait-award-2011/the-exhibition/shortlisted-artists.php

http://www.npg.org.uk/assets/images/assets/BPPortraitAward/2011/L0448_louissmith.jpg

He built and set up an ELABORATE set. http://paintaportrait.org/gallery/holly/

But he's doing the same thing as the hack bourgie http://www.bouguereau.org/La-Vague-(The-Wave).jpg.jpg)

And trying to talk high minded mythology while presenting cheesecake.

Now, I love naked young ladies more than the next guy, but I don't like liars, and they are lying about their intentions.

Well y'know realistic titty will always sell, it's a fact. I do appreciate the skill in any case - Bougereau's skin has such a great tonal range. That said, it always looks kind of waxy and in that painting the edges the hands are resting on are supposed to be what, exactly?

In any case I like all kinds of art but ultimately relate most to representational realism. Painting's been in such a slump since photography revived in the 90's I'm glad to see anyone doing representional realist painting, regardless of how hypocritical their subject matter is.
