Yeah this is pretty big news...love to know why the change of heart -- I'd like to think it was because they'd actually realised that it was a fucking stupid thing to do in the first place.

Flash's compiler never required downloading additional code for an app to run. Backpedal++++++

well, the could temporarily open the floodgates allowing a bunch of poorly developed, buggy, crashy detritus to make it through the approval process - thereby bolstering their position that flash has no place in the iOS kingdom ...

regardless, they will likely have to have some sort of tiered approval system - whereby established devs get their submissions fast-tracked and all the 13 year olds with a cracked copy of CS5 fall to the second tier.

Except that would just make a mockery of the approval system itself. I suppose they could put out a press release in a few months highlighting the difference in approval rate for native and non-native apps (or whatever you want to call them) -- i.e. to show that native apps are more likely to be approved than non-native because the quality isn't as high. :shrug:

  1. This sucks because I've been getting my Flash team up to speed with xcode/cocoa/objectiveC

  2. This doesn't suck because the vast majority (if not all) of CS5 compiled iDevice apps are likely to be rejected anyway (mostly because they are junk and possibly because Apple doesn't want to support Flash compiles anyway).

  3. I find this surprising and as it makes a lot of sense for Apple to lock down their technologies and control revenues as much as possible. I suspect that there is a rabbit hole of reason behind this decision and legitimately supporting Flash is the least of their interests.

  4. The only people who will give a shit (and very much the minority) will be agencies that are geared up for either Flash (they'll think they have a new potential revenue stream) or iDevice development (they'll be worried about the flood of shitty Flash built games hindering their uber-developments from making it through the murk)

I would presume that they are refering to accessing code libraries at runtime which is possible in Flash.
