-O/R||
Original Question:> What is the difference between Black and Registration in Quark. Black comes out grey when exported as an eps, while the registration comes out black, but eats into the text a little. So how do i get a real black backgound in Quark O/R: There's no difference w/regards to registration & black in QX— other than the fact that you don't want to use either one for CMYK. Create a Rich Black instead:
C=20 M=0 Y=0 K=100
If your job is one-color (black) or two colors (ie: black & PMS 289) then you can use the regular Black in QX. If your job is just C & K, you can use a blend— just alert the printer.
Tha.Riddla: Why not: C=100 M=100 Y=100 K=100 ? I use that in illustrator instead of black when I want black, and it's whoopass.
[EDIT: This is, technically, the "Registration color". It was important for film (since it allowed for crops on each separation) but not so much these days. RIP software handles that part.]
O/R: It might be whoopass on a monitor, but that's bad news in the print world; What works on a monitor doesn't necessarily work on a physical surface.
Anytime you start going over 320-330 points of color, you will start having major problems with drying, plugging, hickeys, and host of other paper-related issues, like the ink sliding & curling back because the paper can't absorb the ink properly, or the tooth will flatten & dull your color as well.
And forget trying to lay an aqueous coat or a varnish on top of THAT, you might as well use mud. Also, you could have some issues with the rollers, blankets, & the plates trying to hold & place all of that ink, etc. etc. etc.
Trust me— we have four of the best Heidelbergs money can buy, and I have pushed them as far as they can be pushed working with CMYK. Going over 320 is risky, and over 340 is asking for disaster.
Thad: You can never get a true RGB black in CMYK. That said, I tend to run a rich black on the printer at:
C=40 M=30 Y=25 K=100
Especially if there is any gradients, so there is color in the black for each color to gradiate into.
It should be added that while some of these links advertise free use of their images without cost of royalty, you should excercise extreme caution and research when using these images. Read the usage agreements carefully. Most photographers provide information next to their work besides the photos. So if you are in doubt as to whether or not the creator is retaining rights to the images, DO NOT hesitate to contact them and clarify the situation. It is best to arrange an agreement with the photographer that clears you of any ramifications of copyright infringement, especially when working on a paying commercial project.
