In an effort to finally learn the ins and outs of wordpress Ive given myself a project. A typical CSS gallery site with a tutorial & resources sections.

Ive got 3 designs that Im thinking of. Which do you prefer? 1, 2, or 3.

#1 - just a simple blog. Nothing fancy. I dont really like.

#2 - dont know where I was going with it - any advice on how to liven it up? I think it could show a little promise, but Im braindead right now and have design block on it.

#3- My fave. was thinking about making about 10 or 12 different graffiti transparent PNGs which would be served up randomly (see the Post no bills piece at the bottom). They would appear at random areas above the visible BG

Thanks in advance.

3 could be a cool concept if it was taken further - where each entry was sort of "posted" on the brick wall and you played up the visuals a bit more. I like the idea of using graffiti-ish/handlettered text for some things (but that would obviously be limited to hard-coded info - hard to do well dynamically).

But as it is, the brick background just feels busy and unnecessary.

Right now #1 is my favorite visually, although the logo kind of ruins it. And the tattered edge everywhere is slightly annoying.

Something to think about with a gallery site is that the more you make the site's design come to the forefront, the more the gallery thumbnails have to compete with. And at the end of the day the user is there for the gallery thumbnails, not for your site's cool visuals. I'd say a CSS gallery site should be sleek and efficiently designed, rather than have a lot of character. Because it's there to promote the featured sites, not the other way around.

I think Ill use the grafitti design (a bit more developed) on a different project - it is too loud for this one.

I just used the Gallery template from smashingmagazine with a few tweaks just to get something up. Not too bad, but the menu needs a little work.
