Is there an easy way to apply a watermark to photos as a batch? Best I can tell, the only option that does not involve editing locally and re-uploading every photo is Picnik, but even that requires editing each photo individually.

I usehttp://www.watermarkfactory.com/, but if that isn't your style you can probably batch them in p-shop.

If you're really worried about reuse you shouldn't be putting your photos on Flickr. Read the TOS more carefully, Yahoo can do whatever they want with your photos there - regular stream leechers notwithstanding, let alone the many people all too happy to reuse your images in their blog/newspaper/print project without asking permission or even notifying you.

Watermarks don't do anything except ruin your composition.

Is there any way you can tell if that's the case, or is it only if someone makes you aware of the 3rd-party use?

unless you pay for an image sniffer service (thousands of dollars a year) - you pretty much have to stumble across it.

Tineye can help some.http://www.tineye.com/
