Skin color. Eye color. Hair color. It just doesn't interest me. I don't understand the extent to which it interests - nay, obsesses - other people. Yes, I understand the historical context, blah blah blah. I get why it's exciting that Obama is president.
But I moved on a long, long time ago. And I tend to imagine that the rest of the country, if not the world, has more or less moved on too.
And then, today, while searching the int0rwebs for something totally unrelated to race/racism, I find this fucking site.

I'm shocked - shocked! - to find that gambling is going on in here.
I guess it's like, say, the horrible things some people do to children. I can't conceive of doing them myself, but I know that they happen. There are sick individuals out there. Granted.
But I'd be pretty shocked to find a community of people built around the abuse of children, sitting right out in the open, powered by vBulletin, full of people talking and joking about burning, beating and raping their kids, complete with hilarious animated GIFs.
maybe I'm being hopelessly naive, but I cannot believe that that site represents most people's views.
The only thing that's new here is that a conversation that was once held in private is now made public on an internet forum, and we can hear it and link to it. It's not worth getting worked up over.

The level of stupidity on that site orders on parody.
We used to say if you could buy it, love it, hate it, or abuse it, there was a support group and a magazine for you... the internet is all of that +1000 and the benefit of relative anonymity brings out the stupid.
But that's some eff'd up stuff there. At some point, I'd like to think people would go, "you know, I might think that, but I'm sure as hell not going to say it out loud, or where it can be archived." Clearly, people don't actually think that way though.
But green eyed people really are the worst. 
Last night, my son said to me, "Didn't they still have racism when you were little?"
I had to tell him that, sadly, they we still have racism today. We even checked out that web site for a while.

I'm afraid racism's a long way from dead. it's like folks round here say about hippies and boomers who were going to make change... racists and hippies have just become mainstream. peopl are gonna hate me saying so, but the hippy/racist split falls surprisingly close to the Democrat/Republican fault line.
